The RMS Titanic was one of the biggest and most well know ships ever built and for that reason the disaster has been remembered since she sank almost 100 years go this year. We all know that Titanic hit an iceberg causing the Titanic sinking but why did she sink and what factors influenced her. We will now look back into the Titanic facts which examine the reasons why she sank:

  1. The overall construction of the hull – The overall construction of the hull wasn’t necessarily built to the highest standard possible, in fact it’s thought that some of the rivets used to make up the hull may not have been the best quality. When the ship hit the iceberg the rivets and plates may have come apart more easily than they should have done.
  2. The Turning Circle Of Titanic – Titanic had a very large turning circle, this meant that it would take Titanic a good deal of time to turn after applying change to the rudder. This may have been caused by the sheer small size of the rudder and the fact the volume of water passing across it was too small for the ship.
  3. Titanic’s Speed – We can’t get away from the fact that Titanic was travelling too fast in the ice fields on the night that she sank and Captain Smith should have known better. Had the ship being travelling slower they may have had the chance to avoid the iceberg by turning.
  4. The Angle At Which She Hit – Titanic hit the iceberg on the star-board side causing several of the water tight compartments to be breached immedidately on impact. Theorists have suggested that had Titanic hit the iceberg head on then the ship would not have sunk.
  5. The Weather Conditions – On the night that Titanic sank the weather conditions were calm, this meant that there were very few waves and for that reason it would have been very hard to see any waves breaking at the base of the berg.

Overall, there were several factors contributing to Titanic’s demise, it would probably have been impossible to predict all of them but it’s also possibe that some of them could and should have been avoided.
