TENS means “transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.” A Tens unit is a portable equipment used for pain relief. It sends electrical signals through your skin to the nerves. Normally, the brain gets pain signals through the nerves and the spinal cord. The electrical impulses caused from TENS block most of these pain signals from reaching the brain and consequently you feel less pain.
You should get Tens treatment only on the advice of your physician or a physiotherapist. This treatment does not suit all types of pain.
Pain relief using a Tens unit is very common in cases of neck, shoulders, upper as well as lower back and for those suffering from sciatica. Tens also helps to minimize the pain due to injuries that involve osteoarthritis, chronic musculoskeletal and postoperative pain. It is absolutely a non-invasive way to stimulate the nerves to reduce an acute or chronic pain.
TENS machines are most suitable to provide a temporary relief from any pain caused by a nerve damage in pain relief medicine. These machines have also been tried for relieving labor pain. However, there is not much success in most post-operative cases.
