Seniors are often referred to as the “forgotten” class of society. They constitute almost 25% of the adult population and the only times you usually here about them in a national sense, is with respect to social security and Medicare.
How often do you hear about drug and alcohol abuse issues with senior citizens? I bet not very often.
I authored a series of articles which took an in-depth look at the substance abuse problems facing our nation’s elderly generation. What do you think the issues facing them are? You may be surprised.
First, seniors are facing alcoholism problems in near epidemic proportions. Because they do the majority of their drinking at home and behind closed doors, not involving issues with the law, the problem remains “in the closet.” A large number of seniors drink large amounts of wine and/or hard alcohol and do not recognize they have a problem – and neither does anyone else.
Can you guess what the other substance abuse issue faces our nation’s senior citizens? You are correct if you guessed prescription medication. The abuse among seniors has followed that of the rest of the country and has reached epidemic proportions.
If you are a senior, or know one with a substance abuse problem there are drug classes available. If they prefer to maintain total anonymity there are online alcohol and online drug classes as well.
